Last August, Dave found out that he was accepted to St. George's University in Grenada. When we heard the news, Dave turned to me and said, "We're going to Grenada." We had about three weeks to get ready for the big move. Luckily, Dave and I are both big travelers so this was just sort of...a longer trip for both of us. Now, anyone that knows Dave and I knows that we are totally, last-minute packers. We spent the night before the trip loading up suitcases (not to exceed 50 lbs let me remind you) with everything from tank tops to binders to towels, sunscreen, and sheets. We woke up the next morning and were on our way!
After spending a night in Trinidad and Tobago, we boarded the plane the next morning for the "Isle of Spice." With Caribbean music playing over the speakers, we just looked at each other, smiled, and laughed, as usual. We landed in Grenada and the adventure began.
Last term was great! Other than the fact that we had to re-adjust to dorm life (one room, a 2-burner stove, and a floor with many missing tiles), we made great friends, learned a lot, and began to feel quite settled down here in the Caribbean. Dave had a fabulous semester at school, and I kept myself busy teaching at the Grenada Montessori Prep School, frequenting the beach, and trying out new recipes at home.
Here's a list of some of the things we learned about Grenada:
1. Everything is made with nutmeg!
2. You can't be in a rush anywhere.
3. It's sunny everyday, but when it rains it pours!
4. You really can get by without Target
5. There are no Borders or Barnes and Noble bookstores..ahhh!
6. Green Bananas taste nothing like bananas. They taste more like potatoes...ew
7. Reggae buses don't stop and driving resembles that old game "Frogger"
8. Pizza doesn't come with plates (at least at Bananas, the local bar)
9. Your driver's license looks a bit like a note from mom
and did I mention
10. Everything is made with nutmeg!
Over the last term, we saw lots of fabulous sunsets,
did some amazing snorkeling and scuba diving
experienced Fish Friday in Gouyave
and basically learned a lot while having tons of fun!
After finals, we flew home and spent the holidays back in the US visiting family and friends in New Jersey, Philadelphia, New York, and Florida. Now, we're back on the island, and we've gotten right back into island life.
